The defense investment plan, expected to be published soon, aims to increase military spending to 2.5% of GDP, with nearly £20 billion extra allocated over five years. However, defense officials soon realized they needed an additional £28 billion over four years to meet the commitments. This revelation sparked further tensions, as the Ministry of Defense conducted the review alongside the Treasury's spending review to avoid such a scenario. The defense secretary, John Healey, faced pressure to request more funds due to escalating global conflicts and increased demands on his department's budget.
