Tropical Cyclone Mitchell: A Category 3 Storm on the Horizon
Brace yourselves, folks, because Tropical Cyclone Mitchell is about to take center stage in Western Australia's Pilbara region. This powerful storm is set to intensify, and we're here to break down the latest developments and keep you informed.
Currently positioned off the coast, approximately 145km north of Port Hedland, Mitchell is already packing a punch as a Category 2 storm. But here's where it gets controversial: meteorologists predict that it will strengthen further as it moves north of Karratha overnight.
The Bureau of Meteorology is on high alert, anticipating heavy rainfall and flash flooding later today. Wind gusts of up to 130km/h have already been recorded, and the potential for destructive winds is a cause for concern.
And this is the part most people miss: the warning zone extends from De Grey to Ningaloo, encompassing key towns like Port Hedland, Karratha, Onslow, Exmouth, Pilbara, and Pannawonica. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued a watch and act warning to residents in Whim Creek to Mardie, including Barrow Island and Montebello Islands, urging them to prepare for the worst.
"There is a very real threat to lives and homes as Cyclone Mitchell approaches," the warning states. An evacuation center will be open in Karratha Leisureplex from midday today, providing a safe haven for those in need.
Residents south of Mardie to Carnarvon and inland to Pannwonica are advised to prepare now, while those in Pardoo Roadhouse to east of Whim Creek are encouraged to keep a close eye on conditions.
Mitchell is expected to maintain a steady pace of 16km/h as it travels south towards the Pilbara coast tomorrow, remaining a threat until it makes landfall by Monday. Heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding are forecast for the area, with the potential to extend west into the Gascoyne region.
Very destructive winds are predicted to reach Onslow and possibly Exmouth, causing significant damage. Additionally, abnormally high tides are feared to trigger serious flooding in the Karratha region early tomorrow morning and then in Onslow by the afternoon.
While the storm is expected to downgrade to a Category 2 by Monday night and then a Category 1 by Tuesday, the impact and aftermath are still a cause for concern.
