Islam Makhachev, the UFC welterweight champion, has made a bold statement by refusing a title defense offer at UFC 324. This decision has sparked curiosity and controversy within the MMA community.
The Champion's Stand
Makhachev, with an impressive record of 28-1 MMA and 17-1 UFC, recently won the belt at UFC 322, defeating Jack Della Maddalena. However, when approached by the UFC brass about defending his title in a mere nine weeks, he stood his ground.
"I was offered a January fight, but it was simply unrealistic," Makhachev explained. "I had already been training for three months, and they approached me in December. I made it clear that I needed more time to prepare."
The Potential Opponents
And here's where it gets interesting. While Makhachev believed his potential opponent to be the unbeaten Michael Morales, his co-manager, Ali Abdelaziz, hinted at bigger names during UFC 323 fight week. He mentioned Kamaru Usman and Ian Machado Garry as possible foes.
"They didn't reveal the name, but I think it was Morales. That's my take on it," Makhachev said.
A Delicate Balance
Despite his eagerness to return to the octagon, Makhachev is mindful of the delicate balance between rest and preparation. He aims to fight as early as Q2 of 2026 but acknowledges the possibility of a later date if the UFC chooses to host an event at the White House.
"I believe it will be after Ramadan, around April to June. If the UFC wants to wait for the White House event, I'll be patient. Otherwise, I'm ready to fight sooner," he added.
